Dover Remembers Brave Louis Bleriot!

On the 25th of July 1909, Frenchman Louis Bleriot became the first person to fly a powered aircraft across the English channel from Calais to Dover with the help of a brief rain shower near the Kent coast, that cooled his overheating engine, enabling him to complete his historic flight!

To mark this historic event, the Dover Amateur Radio Club operated on all bands with the special event call GB100LB on the 25th and 26th July 2009.

We hoped to make as many contacts as possible with French Radio Amateurs, in particular, while also generating lots of global contacts.

To celebrate the remarkable French achievement, there were lots of other activities off the White Cliffs of Dover, including a display by the RAF's Red Arrows and a swarm of microlite aircraft crossing the Channel and an air race with replicas of Louis Bleriot's mk11 aircraft crossing and landing at The Duke Of Yorks playing fields near to Dover Castle.

We aimed to be on these frequecies whenever possible, 30m CW 10.115, 20m CW 14.025-14.030 SSB 14.250-14270. 17m CW 18.072-18080, SSB 18.150-18.160, 15m CW 21.025-21030 SSB 21.025-21.1270. for 12m, 10m, and 6m we will look for contacts if bands are open, 2m FM and SSB for X Channel  contacts. We also were active on DSTAR on Reflector 13a via GB7FK C.
