This information page is intended to provide sufficient information to enable prospective students decide if they wish to join the Radio Amateur Intermediate Licence Training Course. Training at the Dover Radio Club is carried out by Brian Joyner, David Harding and Fred Knight on behalf of the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB).
COURSE & EXAMINATION
It is our policy to limit the numbers in each course so that we can tailor the training to suit the learning abilities of each group with the main emphasis being on demonstration and hands-on learning. In order to obtain the ‘Intermediate’ class transmitting licence trainees are required to have the practical aspects of their work assessed and pass a simple multiple-choice examination. As the Dover Radio Club is a registered examination centre trainees are able to sit the exam’ in familiar surroundings. The course completion slip and the exam’ pass certificate will allow the holder to obtain the ‘Intermediate’ licence permitting operation in the Amateur VHF and H.F. (Short Wave) bands using an output power of 50 Watts.
The choice of how far students progress is left to them but advice and help will always be available to those requiring it. All Amateur Radio licenses are free of charge to persons under the age of 21 or over 75.
Morse code is no longer compulsory but the Dover Radio Club provides Morse coaching for those who wish to use this mode of operation and is also a registered RSGB Morse assessment centre.
INSTRUCTORS
The three instructors each provide tuition on the different aspects of the course. In addition to being appointed by the RSGB to carry out instruction on their behalf they all have a background in teaching or training within industry and have been subjected to a Police (CRB) checks for teaching young persons. Parents are welcome to accompany their children. It should be noted that a parental consent form will have to be completed for all trainees under the age of 16.
COURSE VENUE AND DURATION
Courses will be held at the Dover Grammar School for Boys at 7pm each Wednesday evening during term time, normally commencing in the autumn. The course consists of approximately twelve lessons, covering several elements, including safety, component identification, construction of simple electronic circuits, operating practices etc. Most of the lessons will build and expand on the knowledge gained during Foundation training and will be of a practical nature based on ‘learning by doing’ principles where possible.
COST OF MATERIALS
During the course all trainees will build certain items of equipment. As these items become the property of trainees we make a charge, at cost price, for the materials and components used. The cost of these items will be made known to all prospective trainees prior to enrolment. All other materials, tools, equipment and the tuition are free of charge.
CLUB MEETINGS
All trainees are welcome to attend the club meetings after each training session. Upon completion of the course we actively encourage trainees to join the club.
